In connection with this year’s 460th anniversary of the death of Emperor and King Ferdinand I, we bring you the first article about the construction development of our cathedral during his reign.
During the summer months we will be commemorating several anniversaries of important people who are connected in some way with the Cathedral. Read about the builders, chroniclers and kings who contributed to the cathedral’s survival to this day. The text is compiled from short trailers prepared for you regularly by Mr. Ing. Ondřej Stříteský from the team of the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus in Prague.
The round anniversary of the day of his death last week was marked by another important canon of our metropolitan chapter, besides the chapter dean and later the first archbishop of Prague, Arnost of Pardubice, whom we would like to introduce to you.
The outer shell of the cathedral stands out for its many artistic treasures in the form of sculptural works, richly worked stone elements and polychrome stone coats of arms, and especially for its very rich building history.
Even in the smaller rural churches located near the nobleman’s mansions, one specific architectural element can be seen near the main altar. It is the so-called oratory (=place of prayer), usually elevated in the form of an open emporium.
